Install ClassicMenu Indicator ~ Ubuntu 11.04

  • ClassicMenu Indicator is a notification area applet (application indicator) for the top panel of Ubuntu’s Unity desktop.  It provides users with a classic style gnome menu they are used to from previous versions of Ubuntu.  It even includes Wine games and applications that may be installed.  This is an option if you want a classic gnome menu for Unity but do not want to change the Unity dash which I wrote about here.

The latest version, version 0.03, added the following features:

    - Added menu and application icons
    - Added “Settings” and System Administration” menus
    - Using mono style icon
    - Added –help and –version command line options

A deb file is available on the developer’s website but for this tutorial, I will show you how to install from their PPA.

Run the following commands in the terminal:

    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:diesch/testing
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install classicmenu-indicator

Then start the classicmenu indicator from the Unity dash and it will show up in the notification area.
